Introducing “Guts Poker”: Saturdays @ 9am

1 December 2009 3 Comments

Introducing “Guts Poker”, our new 9:00 a.m. class! Get ready to gamble!

** A 20 minute mash up of CrossFit exercises, and this is how it works: everyone puts up one dollar. After everyone is in, then everyone will be dealt a playing card face down. When the timer starts, everyone flips their card and does whatever exercise is displayed on their card.

The value of each card determines the difficulty of the exercise, i.e. Ace of Spades is 25 GHD sit-ups, an Eight of Spades is 15 Knees to Elbows, while a Two of Spades is 10 AbMat sit-ups. Once an exercise is completed, one returns to the Dealer’s table and gets their next card, and so on for 20 minutes.

Rules:

* If you must scale the weight down, you must add the same number of repetitions, i.e. if the exercise calls for 15 squats with 35 lb dumbells, and you need to use 25 lb dumbells, then you would need to add 10 repetitions to the exercise (25 squats with 25 lb dumbells).

* If you think you cannot perform the exercise on the card, then you may request another card after completing a 10 Burpee penalty.

* We use two decks: if you happen to draw the same exact card twice, then you can use the second card as a Wild Card.

* You must return to the Dealer’s table to receive your next card.

* If time expires before you complete your assigned exercise, you do not get to play that card.

At the end of 20 minutes, you play your best five cards like a poker hand. Best hand wins the pot, plus a large (373 cal) “Paleokit” (a vacuum sealed packet of free-range beef jerky, macadamia nuts, raw pecans, raw almonds, dried cranberries and dried strawberries).

You don’t necessarily need a lot of cards to win, although the more cards you have, the better your odds. So hustle!
